STEP UP TO CARPENTRY

Thank you to our 2009 Program Partners! We couldn't have done it without you!
We do not anticipate offering this program in 2010. If you would like to be put on a list for the next time we do offer it, please contact Rachel Jolly.

Program Overview:

This six-week program for women interested in careers in carpentry offers participants hands-on skills training and experience in addition to employment skills and extensive employment support. VWW works with successful graduates of the program for up to a year as they seek positions with our employer partners. The spring 2009 class in commercial and residential carpentry wove sustainable, or ‘green’ building practices throughout the curriculum.

Topics include:

  • Resource extraction
  • Material selection
  • Location
  • Site considerations
  • Waste diversion
  • Energy
  • Health
  • Durability
  • Recycling

We look for women who are interested in learning the trades and can commit to an intensive, six-week program and begin work upon completion of the training.

I came into this program confident that it would be a priceless and important experience in moving forward in my life...I am completely satisfied and grateful.” -- 2008 graduate

The Step Up To Carpentry program includes these primary components:

  • Women's Resources Topics - general employment and retention skills
  • Trades Training Topics - issues related to the trades in general as well as specific skills in both carpentry/construction and painting
  • Job Shadows - participants work alongside employer partners at commercial and residential job sites for two to four days per participant over the course of the first three weeks of class
Led by the capable, hilarious and successful business owner Amy Judd (a Step Up graduate and VWW Board member), 2008 participants worked on the design, planning and construction of an 8' x 12' custom salt-box roofed, "deluxe" garden shed. Students were involved in everything from making a trip to the local lumberyard to purchasing materials, framing, roofing and window installation. During just six weeks, participants became comfortable using a variety of power tools as well as the steps required to take a structure from design to reality!

I have been pleasantly surprised by the quality of the programming and nurturing atmosphere afforded the participants by the instructors. They obviously care deeply about the goals of the program and the participants.” -- 2008 graduate

A Step Up to Carpentry graduate designed and built this shed for Shelburne MeadowsResidents and volunteers of the Shelburne Meadows Association’s Affordable Housing Community pose with their new community garden shed. Cindy Storey, a 2008 Step Up to Carpentry graduate, designed and built the shed.
